Mirza Fakhrul denied bail in CJ’s residence attack case

Shawdesh desk: A magistrate court in Dhaka on Thursday (February 1, 2024) did not grant bail to BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in a case filed with the city’s Ramna Model Police Station over attack on the Chief Justice’s residence at Kakrail in the capital on October 28 last year.
Metropolitan magistrate Farzana Shakila Sumu Chowdhury didn’t grant bail after bail hearing on Thursday (February 1).

Earlier on Wednesday, Mirza Fakhrul’s counsel submitted the bail petition to the Dhaka’s metropolitan magistrate Mahbub Ahmed’s court. The magistrate ordered if the court would get the case document from the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court, the bail hearing would take place.
Fakhrul filed fresh bail petition with the lower court 21 days after the High Court denied his bail in the case.

Fakhrul’s lawyer Zainul Abedin prayed for the bail of his client on the grounds that his some senior party colleagues, including Abdul Awal Mintoo, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and Nitai Roy Chowdhury were earlier granted pre-arrest bails by the High Court while the lower court granted bail to several low-ranking leaders of the party, who was also made accused in the same case.

Eleven cases were filed against Mirza Fakhrul over the vandalism, clash and arson attacks over the grand rally on October 28 last. Of those, eight cases were filed at Paltan Police Station and three at Ramna Model Police Station. Now he is in prison. However, the judicial court has granted him bail in 10, out of these 11 cases.

However, the High Court did not grant him bail in the case related to the attack on Chief Justice’s residence.

Fakhrul has been in jail for 96 days since October 29, 2023 when he was picked up by the Detective Branch of police from his Uttara residence in the case filed over an attack on the residence of chief justice.

The 76-year-old BNP leader filed the petition with the High Court on December 10, 2023 seeking bail in the case of attacking the house of the chief justice after Dhaka metropolitan sessions judge Faisal Atique Bin Quader denied him bail in an order on November 22, 2023.
